Founded in 1971, Panopticon Gallery is one of the oldest galleries in the United States dedicated solely to photography. Until 2007, the company included a premier imaging lab that served both professional and amateur photographers, museums, historical associations, and educational institutions. The lab is now a separate business, Panopticon Imaging, based in Hingham, MA.
We specialize in 20th Century American photography and emerging contemporary photography. In addition, we partner with historic organizations and museums to create and distribute reproduction prints of vintage photographic images. Our staff is comprised of experienced art dealers, fine art photographers and imaging professionals who share a passion for photography.
We welcome the opportunity to assist both experienced and new collectors with researching and selecting images for acquisition. If a desired print is not in our inventory, we are happy to purchase it for you through other art dealers, auctions, or art fairs.
Our clients include private collectors as well as noteworthy museums and corporations, including: Center for Creative Photography, Chrysler Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art, DeCordova Museum, George Eastman House, High Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library Schomburg Center, and Smithsonian Museum.
We are the exclusive agents for the estates of Bradford Washburn and Ernest C. Withers and we also represent the following artists:
Through close collaboration with our artists and book publishers, we edited and produced gelatin silver prints for several monographs, including:
- Mount McKinley: The Conquest of Denali, photographs by Bradford Washburn, Harry N. Abrams, 1991
- Pictures Tell the Story: Reflections in History photographs by Ernest C. Withers, Chrysler Museum of Art, 2000
- The Memphis Blues Again: Six Decades of Memphis Music Photographs, photographs by Ernest C. Withers, Viking Studio (a member of Penguin Putnam Inc.), 2001
- Mount McKinley's West Buttress: The First Ascent, photographs by Bradford Washburn, Top Of The World Press, 2003
- Negro League Baseball, photographs by Ernest C. Withers, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 2005
In the fall of 2007, we launched a seminar series dedicated to educating the public about collecting fine art photography. Speakers for this series have included art critic Andy Grundberg and Photographic Resource Center Director Jim Fitts. We enjoy sharing our knowledge of and love for this medium and strive to create a welcoming environment for all photography enthusiasts. We look forward to hearing from you.
